Tree work in King’s Lynn: the five jobs people ask about

Almost every enquiry is one of these, or two of them together. Under each: what it involves, when it is the right call, and the snag that tends to catch people out in West Norfolk.

Independent enquiry service, not a tree surgery firm. Your enquiry goes to an established local tree surgery firm, who quotes and does the work direct.

Dismantling and felling

Guide price: £400 to £1,500 or more

Felling means the tree comes down. In an open field that can be one cut and a shout. In a terraced garden off Gaywood Road it is nothing like that: a climber goes up, takes the tree apart in sections from the top, and lowers each piece on a rope, because there is a conservatory underneath and a neighbour’s fence on the other side. That is dismantling, and it is where most of the money goes. The time, the second pair of hands, the rigging.

It is the right call when a tree is dead, badly split, diseased, or simply too close to a building to keep. It is usually the wrong call when the complaint is shade or leaf-fall, because a reduction deals with both and the tree stays.

The snag is access. If the chipper truck cannot get near, everything gets carried by hand, and the quote will say so. Ash with dieback is its own category: the wood can fail without warning, so some firms bring in a platform instead of climbing.

Weighing it up? Read felling or crown reduction before you commit.

Crown reduction and pruning

Guide price: from £150 for a small tree, more for a mature one

Pruning is the small stuff. Deadwood out, a branch off the roof, the lowest limbs lifted so the mower fits underneath. Crown reduction is bigger: the whole outline is shortened and thinned, with the cuts made back to a sensible junction so the tree keeps its shape and its health.

What it should not be is topping, where the head is simply sawn off and the tree answers with a thicket of weak, fast regrowth. Most reputable firms steer clear of it. If a quote just says “top the tree”, ask exactly what is being cut and where.

Limes, like the older ones around South Wootton, sprout from the trunk and base every year and need a regular tidy. A reduction is not forever either. Expect to revisit it in a few years.

Check for a TPO before you book anything. Pruning counts as work.

Timing matters here: when to prune, and when to leave the birds alone.

Stump grinding in King’s Lynn

Guide price: from £80 a stump

A grinder chews the stump and the top of the root plate into chippings, usually to a depth below the lawn. It is quick, and it leaves a hole of woodchip rather than a crater.

It is the sensible option when you want turf, a patio or a new tree in the same place. It is less sensible if the stump is going to be a log seat or a planter, or if the stump is in a back garden you can only reach through the house. A grinder is a machine on tracks, so ask about gates, steps and width.

On clay, remember that a ground-out stump leaves old roots to rot down for years. Nothing wrong with that, but do not plant a replacement tree in exactly the same spot without asking the firm.

Price, machine widths and what is left behind are on the stump grinding in King’s Lynn page. Options beyond grinding are in stump grinding, or leave it?

Hedge cutting in King’s Lynn

Guide price: from £60 a visit

A garden hedge, one visit, clippings taken away. That is where £60 comes from. Add height, length, a ladder or a platform and the figure moves, and a leylandii wall that has not been touched for ten years is a different job from a tidy privet.

Two things to know. First, nesting birds: roughly February to August is the period to be careful, and a decent firm will look before they cut. Second, a neighbour’s tall evergreen hedge is a council matter rather than a tree surgeon’s: councils have a formal process for complaints about high hedges, so start there.

Out in the countryside, taking out an old hedgerow altogether can need the council’s say-so under the Hedgerows Regulations. Trimming does not. Removal might.

Access, price and the nesting-season rule are on the hedge cutting in King’s Lynn page. Seasonal rules are also in the pruning calendar guide.

Emergency and storm damage

Guide price: none worth quoting, priced on the day

When a gale has been through, tree firms get busy fast, and prices on the day reflect it. We will not pretend there is a tidy figure. A limb across a drive is a short job. A tree through a roof, with a crane, is not.

Safety first. If anything is touching a power line, stay well clear and ring 105. If a road is blocked or anyone is at risk, dial 999. Do not go up a ladder to a hanging limb.

For everything else, choose “Storm damage, urgent” on the form and say what has come down and what it is lying on. We pass it on marked urgent. We cannot promise an attendance time, because we do not run the crews.

It is worth photographing the damage before anything moves, in case your home insurance needs it.

Send an urgent enquiry, or read the guide prices for planned work.

Not sure which of these you have? Send the form and say what the tree is doing, and the firm will tell you what it thinks it needs. The guide prices show what each job usually costs, and if the tree might be protected, read the TPO and conservation area guide before anything is cut. We pass enquiries on from Gaywood and the town centre, South and North Wootton, Dersingham and the Sandringham villages and Downham Market.
